My Introduction

The purpose of writing any book review or summary, from my personal point of view, is to attract readers to read the book, by leaving a space to the reader to decide whether to buy the book or not. It should be short, concise, and attractive.

Here I list the chapters of the this book: "The Art of Innovation" with a brief summary of some chapters and others will be left blank.

In this book, the author, Tom Kelley, defines the innovation as an art and how it should be viewed from a client's perspective; As a result, Tom highlights how innovation is important in getting your work done in a perfect way.

The process of innovating is made simple and clear by Tom, but it needs ideal brainstorming, examining the products using client's eyes, and researching all detailed product aspects.

My ranking for this book is: 9.5 out of 10. ✌

Book Summary

Innovation at the top

In the early stages, companies looked to outsource the product development for many reasons: no capacity, deadlines, expertise, and innovation.

The stories listed in this chapter will show you how the innovation have shifted up to the top of the list with highest priority and importance. Marketing is based on intelligence and strategy; if you create innovative products, you will win the market.

Winging it in start-up mode

Diversity of cultures is a key of innovation. This chapters will give you the story of IDEO, Tom Kelley's company, and how he gathered the team from different backgrounds and enjoyed seeing them preparing their offices in creative ways.

Innovation begins with an eye

You cannot innovate in product creation unless you ask, by yourself, as a product developer, the final end-user of the product.
Go to the market, ask the product user about his/her pain than go back to your office to solve this issue with creativity.

Some end users might be kids, you need to give them a sample product and see how they interact with it. They will give you brilliant ideas of how to enhance the product.

The key here is to test the product with people who break the product manual rules and you will discover a lot of new possibilities to upgrade or modify your product.

The perfect brainstorm

This is the best chapter of the book. Once you read it, you will discover that you don't know how to brainstorm perfectly.

Tom highlights 7 key rules to follow and 6 key rules to avoid for brainstorming.

A cool company needs hot groups

Hot groups is a mind-set. You need to gather team members and motivate them to be self-motivators, creative, and capable of motivating other members.

Hot groups should be dedicated to deadlines, enthusiastic, problem solvers, auto-generators of energy, passionate about their work, can find opportunities in obstacles, challenge lovers, diversified in terms of background and culture, take responsibility as a team for all internal and external tasks, trust each others, meet frequently and share ideas on all occasions.

For each of the above characteristics, Tom gives examples of behavior and teaches us to follow similar steps.

At the end of this chapter, Tom details the eight crazy characters for hot groups: The visionary, the troubleshooter, the iconoclast, the pulse taker, the craftsman, the technologist, the entrepreneur, and the cross-dresser.

Live the future

After working on thousands of innovations, it won't be difficult for your team to expect the future without a lot of guesswork.
With a lot of observations, your team can head to early adopters of the intended products where you can plan your future innovation.

For example, if you are concerned about what new technical threats might upset your company's computer security? Listen to hackers brag about their latest exploits.

Also, you need to create your own conceptual products and make a movie out of the milestones of that product. You don't need to budget a lot for the movie, you can rather film short shots as a trailer to make a success story that everybody will enjoy seeing later on.

Getting in the swing

Here you will find the butter of the whole book, the best advises that will save hundreds of hours of your work and you will avoid the failure.

One of the advises is: "Give and Take", it shows you the one of the best tactics to deal with you boss or manager if you are assigned a task or a project. If you follow this advice, you can submit, as early as possible, few prototypes or scenarios and discuss them to get the green light, than continue with the remaining time with no possibility of failure.
